British Traditional Wicca
British Traditional Wicca (BTW) is a term used to describe the traditions of Wicca that originated from the New Forest coven. The most notable traditions are Gardnerian and Alexandrian Wicca, though there are others who may claim a connection to these traditions. To be considered a practitioner of BTW one must have been trained and initiated by a Priest or Priestess of sufficient degree within the Gardnerian or Alexandrian traditions and who can trance their lineage back to Gardner or Sanders.
Alexandrian Wicca
This tradition was founded by Alex Sanders, an English occultist and High Priest. He claimed to have been initiated into this tradition by his grandmother when he was seven, however Patricia Crowther says that Sanders contacted her in 1961 when he was 35 in which he did not describe himself as an initiate but as “interested”. Alexandrian Wicca is very much like Gardnerian Wicca but with more of a focus upon Ceremonial Magic. As with Gardnerian Wicca, one can only be an Alexandrian Wiccan if initiated into the tradition by a Priest or Priestess who can trace their lineage back to Sanders.
Gardnerian Wicca
Gardnerian Wicca is a tradition of Wicca, whose members can trace initiatory descent from Gerald Gardner. The term "Gardnerian" was probably coined by the founder of Cochranian Witchcraft, Robert Cochrane in the 1950s or 60s, who himself ridiculed the tradition. Gardner claimed to have learned the beliefs and practises that would later become known as Gardnerian Wicca from the New Forest Coven, who he claimed initiated him into their ranks in 1939. For this reason, Gardnerian Wicca is usually considered to be the earliest tradition of Wicca, from which most subsequent Wiccan traditions are derived.
Eclectic Wicca
Eclectic Wicca is the most prevalent collection of denominations of Wicca. Eclectic Wiccans do not have to be initiated into an existing tradition, although some traditions of Eclectic Wicca do insist on initiation. The main difference is that Eclectic Wiccans cannot trace their lineage back to the New Forest coven either due to self-dedication, or initiation into an Eclectic coven.
Dianic Wicca
The Dianic tradition was formed by Zsuzsanna Budapest in the 1970s and is a feminist branch of Wicca. It includes aspects of British Traditional Wicca mingled with Italian folk magic, feminist ritual and healing. Covens are usually female only and some are exclusively lesbian. Though fairly eclectic, most Dianic witches worship only The Goddess or view The God as only a consort and not an equal.
Seax-Wica
Founded by Gardnerian initiate Raymond Buckland in the early 1970s Seax-Wica is an Anglo-Saxon based tradition. Seax-Wica primarily honours Woden and Freya, allows self-initiation into the tradition and does not employ an oath of secrecy.
